OCT enables visualization of a cross section or 3D image analysis of the retina and detect the early onset of a variety of eye conditions and eye diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy (the top three diseases known to cause blindness).

Everyone over the age of 50 should have an initial baseline OCT scan done even if nothing is wrong. The subsequent follow up scans give an accurate information on progression of diseases if present
